CYCLISTS REPRESENTING CYCLISTS

CALIFORNIA SPINAL CORD INJURY LAWYERS

35+ Years Representing Injured Cyclists Throughout California

Spinal cord injuries are not only scary; they can also be downright damaging to your entire life. Depending on the severity of the injury, you could be down for a few days or completely paralyzed for the rest of your life. For cyclists, a spinal cord injury can permanently affect your ability to get back on the road and enjoy your favorite activity.

Because of the sensitive nature of this type of injury, the trauma it involves, and the in-depth recovery and emotional toll it takes on a person, it is best to have a qualified spinal cord injury attorney, like those at Bike Legal, by your side. While we handle the important details of your case — working to get you the compensation you are entitled to as a result of injuries sustained during the accident — you can focus on your recovery.

Types of Spinal Cord Injuries

Unfortunately, bicycle accidents are one of the leading causes of spinal cord injuries. While not every spinal cord injury has permanent effects, many of them do. In general, these are incredibly serious injuries that often affect numerous aspects of a person’s life. A spinal cord injury can affect mobility and physical and cognitive function. However, with proper medical treatment, many individuals are able to make partial or even complete recoveries. As previously mentioned, the nature and severity of your spinal cord injury will play a large role in the length and intensity of your recovery.

There are several different types of spinal cord injuries. These include:

  • Cervical spinal cord injuries: These tend to be the most severe type of spinal cord injury, as they occur nearer to the brain and affect a larger portion of the body than other types of spinal cord injuries. Cervical spinal cord injuries can result in quadriplegia/tetraplegia.
  • Thoracic spinal cord injuries: These injuries often affect the upper chest, mid-back, back, and abdominal muscles. This can, in turn, affect the victim’s ability to breathe freely and easily or cough. Thoracic spinal cord injuries can result in paraplegia.
  • Lumbar spinal cord injuries: These spinal cord injuries typically affect the lower back and lower half of the body, whereas the upper half of the torso and body is unaffected. Victims may experience some loss of leg and hip function, as well as loss of bladder/bowel control.
  • Sacral spinal cord injuries: These injuries affect the area near the tailbone (also known as the coccyx). Victims can experience loss of bladder and bowel control, as well as loss of sexual function/sexual dysfunction. Hips and legs may also be affected.

In addition to these types of spinal cord injuries, all such injuries typically fall under one of two categories: complete spinal cord injuries and incomplete spinal cord injuries. A complete spinal cord injury is one that results in permanent effects, whereas an incomplete spinal cord injury will result in partial and/or temporary damage.
