How Your Car Insurance Can Protect You On the Bike

Let's face it...it certainly isn't getting any easier to ride our bikes on our public roads.  Traffic has increased, distracted driving is on the rise, and motorists are becoming more angry and aggressive towards cyclists.

We are all aware of the most obvious ways to protect ourselves: helmets, reflective clothing, lights, and, of course, obeying the rules of the road. 

There is another way we can all afford ourselves another layer of protection.  Bike Legal recommends ALL  cyclists review their uninsured/underinsured coverage on their automobile policies.  You may not be aware, but in many auto vs bicycle collisions wherein a cyclist is injured, uninsured/underinsured coverage could provide you the protection you need if you are struck by an uninsured or underinsured driver.

We want to believe that drivers protect themselves and carry adequate insurance, but this is not always the case.  In fact, approximately 13% of all drivers on our roads are uninsured, with some states approaching nearly 30%. 

On top of this, the minimum requirement for automobile insurance coverage is relatively low, with a national average of about $25,000 and some states as low as $15,000 (California has a $15,000 minimum requirement for coverage.)  To provide you with some perspective, over 80% of cyclists represented by Bike Legal incurred at least $30,000 in medical expenses, and oftentimes is significantly more.
