Cyclist killed by hit-and-run driver in Griffith Park

Our cycling community has suffered another terrible loss.

Andrew Jelmert, a five-time participant in the AIDS/LifeCycle Ride and member of the team Different Spokes, was struck and killed Saturday, April 16 in Griffith Park by a hit-and-run driver who was later apprehended and is in custody. Mr. Jelmert was 77-years young and leaves behind a husband, family members, and countless friends.

Mr. Jelmert was participating in the “SoCal Day on the Ride” organized by AIDS/LifeCycle. He was riding northbound in the 4400 block of Crystal Springs Drive at approximately, 3:49 p.m. when he was struck by a BMW also traveling northbound. Mr. Jelmert suffered blunt force trauma that resulted in his death at the scene. A fellow rider was quoted by a news saying the alleged driver had passed him moments earlier going at least 80mph in a 25mph zone.
