On Tuesday, August 13, 2019, a cyclist was killed when a car drifted off the highway and struck the man from behind. The driver was a teenage male who was taking his teammates home after an early morning practice.
All the occupants of the vehicle stayed on the scene, and they called for medical assistance immediately after the collision. Passersby gave the cyclist CPR before emergency responders arrived. However, the man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
An investigation is underway to determine whether or not distracted driving or any other factor caused the driver to move onto the shoulder.
The teen behind the wheel had his driver’s license for under a year, which means he is prohibited from operating a vehicle with passengers under 20 years of age. On top of being charged for violating the restrictions of his intermediate license, he could also face a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge.
Motorists are reminded to be watchful of bike riders on the road. Cyclists’ have rights just as any other vehicle.
